about

Japanese ambient composer Saito Koji isn't afraid of long durations. As you may have already observed, three of these five pieces exceed forty minutes in length, which might present a fairly daunting prospect to any would-be listener, were it not for the fact that these extended soundscapes are so effortlessly immersive. There's really nothing difficult about Koji's music, which welcomes you into its warm, mellifluous tones via 'Blue' a stirring and poignant piece of audio that feels no pressure to conform to the conventions of narrative development or the microsonic complexities associated with contemporary electronic ambience. Anyone who heard Akira Rabelais' remix disc that accompanied Harold Budd's Avalon Sutra album will have an idea of where this album's going: Koji's work seems to be structured around simple repetitions and loops that move like tides, slowly and gracefully across what might in less capable hands become intimidating time frames. Theme is undoubtedly a remarkably pretty album, not to mention a marvellous outing into auditory inertia.
